I Have Been Adopted

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

In December it was one year since we lost our 14 year old dog. She passed with complications related to old age. I really didn’t think I would ever consider another. She was truly irreplaceable. Our relationships with our pets are like no others. Maybe it’s that unconditional love they give us. I don’t know, but after year I was feeling the absence of a four legged friend.
I was look at Pet Finders and couldn’t believe all of the animals in need of a home! I needed a walking buddy so my search for the perfect pooch began.

O.K. so there is no such thing as perfect. I made several trips to our local animal shelter. I would read a bio and take a trip. My first observation was the large number of Pitt Bull and Pitt Bull mixes there were.

From there I began my research. There are some fantastics websites like BadRap (in my home state). I also found a wealth of information at Pitt Bull Lovers From there I read a couple of books that were recommend. Bottom line: I asked myself those hard questions and realized that my biggest concern was dealing with other people and their misconceptions. That was one I could deal with. My last dog was a Boxer/SharPe mix that had no tolerance for other dogs.

On my next trip to the shelter I was looking at 1 year old pup that couldn’t stand still and didn’t even know I was there. My daughter was in another exercise pen with a Brindle, male pit who was about 1 year old. He was calm and attentive. He intrigued me… I went to see him. I squatted to say hello. He looked me in the eye, licked my cheek and rested his head on my chest. The rest as they say is history. Without going into a lot of detail, he had already been temperament tested. Though shelter dogs can act very differently once they are in a home environment, he remains a people pleaser.

Below is my new best friend, Riddick and he is in his forever home. He’s had all of his shots and has been neutered and chipped. We’ve been attending obedience classes. He responds well to the clicker, treats and praise.

He walks with me daily and isn’t too put of when people cross to the other side of the street when they see him coming. I crocheted him a walking sweater but it turned out so big that fits my daughter’s German Shepard mix.Riddick

This Blog is Really Spooky

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

It’s good thing Halloween is in the air because this blog is full of cobwebs! Not the pretty thread crocheted kind either. These cobwebs are the no one has been here for a while kind!

I am offically finished with the certification course I was taking. This is me doing the happy dance. I can’t belive how much time it took.

I didn’t blog much but I still manged to crochet and even work in some knitting. Hey, I had to keep grounded. Sometime the head gets so full that the only way to stop the spinning is through the hands.

I am off to surf the net and see what the verdict is on the new Crochet Me book.

Is This Learning or Teaching?

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

The prodigal daughter has come home. My youngest child (the one who gave me three stretch marks- but I’m over almost over it) asked me to teach her to knit. I demonstrated, and then handed the sticks to her. She grabbed them like bayonets, stuck her tongue out, hunched her shoulder and dug in! Why oh why did I not take a picture? After twisted, dropped and mangled stitches she asked if it frustrated me that she was so awkward at it. I could honestly answer that it did not. Has she forgotten who toilet trained her? Now that was frustrating. Yuck!

After an hour she said it didn’t feel right and could I teach her to crochet instead? I assured her that I could. I taught her older sister and recently, her sister in-law. I reminded her that the hat a blanket I made her son for Christmas were both crocheted. We made a date for tomorrow.

My grandmother taught me to crochet. She said I was too clumsy to knit. It seems to skip a generation. I am really fortunate that it didn’t skip me and that I get to be the one to teach both of my daughters and my daughter in-law. I have learned to appreciate their determination to succeed, their humility to be taught and to learn. I can’t wait to watch their creativity and self expression begin in a new medium.

I always thought it would be cool to be hot. WRONG

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

So you say it’s too hot to crochet or knit? Let me tell you how hot it is….. It’s so hot I was tempted to crawl in the turtle pond. Instead, I opted for the bath tub. No room for Mr. Right. He’s on his own. Besides we can’t both fit and he wouldn’t DARE jack with a woman who is laying in the bath tub, has two knitting needles in her hands and is having a hot flash in the middle of freakin’ heat wave! Yea, it makes one mean. No pictures for this one. It’s not pretty. By the way, I am knitting a pair of toe up socks on one circ. Short row toe and undecided on the heel. Will I ever wear socks again? Wool at that!

Knitted Babe Finished

Monday, May 15th, 2006

My 5 year old granddaughter loves to look through my crochet and knitting books. Last week she found Knitted Babes. She grabbed my face in both of her hands (best way to get an adults attention) looked me straight in the eyes and pleaded for me to maker her one with purple hair, green eyes and pink lips. Only the hardest of hearts could have refused.

In age of computerized and interactive toys, I really didn’t think that this little doll would hold her attention for very long. I guess there are some things that never change. Is it that magic that happens between a little girl and her doll? Or maybe it’s the love we tenderly place in every stitch when we create something for someone we care about. This child is in love with little knitted Lila Jane. She sleeps with her and takes her everywhere she can. She treats this doll with a tenderness that pulls at the heart strings. What a surprise!!

I used scraps of fabric from clothes I have sewn for Lila’s pants and top. Her hippie hat and Birkenstocks were made from a wool coat I felted (and will probably be using for the next 20 years!). I crocheted the straps of her sandals and hat band with pearl cotton.

YO HO, YO HO A PIRATES LIFE FOR ME

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

I had a request for better pics of Mr. Right’s tatoos. I guess he isn’t the only pirate fan. As you can tell, he is also a big Pirates of the Caribbean fan. When the tatoo artist showed him the transfer for the one on his arm, Caribbean was spelled wrong! The one on his is leg is depicting a scene from the ride and I guess the movie too.

She Thinks She’ll Keep Him

Sunday, April 9th, 2006

I can’t believe in my last post I referred to “sun”. We here in Nor Cal are experiencing more rain than I can remember for this time of year. It’s taking its toll on farming and flooding in many areas.

The constant rain has contributed to a really uncharacteristic bout of the blues! I previously posted that my office is closing and if I want to stay with the company it looks like I would have endure a horrific commute. We (Mr. Right and I) have decided that the quality of life is more important than corporate employment. With this comes the people part. Missing the people I have worked with for a very long time. Missing the culture we’ve created. No matter what happens this will never be the same. This combined with the physical effects of the weather, a raging case of PMS and my fish, Earl died was about all I could handle.

I have never suffered from chronic depression. My heart goes out to those who do. During this brief period I think the hardest part was the loss of hope. Those who deal with this chronically are heroes in my book.

Instead of “tough talking” me or reminding me of how much I really have that makes me happy (I already know this stuff already) -his usual MO when I complain- Mr. Right was kind and supportive. He took every on task and decision I had to do or make, gave me space and really cared for me. The man who NEVER sends me flowers did just that. This sooo makes it worth all of the times I wanted to strangle him.

I am feeling much better. I don’t know about you but a new project really does it for me! I love planning (even the math!) the design. Even if I am using someone else’s I usually tweak it or modify it. I love selecting the colors, texture, fabric, yarn……. With all of that said my new project doesn’t have any of that! I LOVED the Colinette Flapjack Throw from “Toast & Marmalade” since the first time I saw it in a magazine. I am going to crochet this puppy without changing as stitch! So she says…. I found the Colinette “Prism” yarn for less than half the usual price from one of my favorite eBay sellers and it’s on the way! How’s this baby for a Granny Square? My hook is poised and waiting. Now watch it get 100 degrees with melting sunshine before it gets here.

Get Me Outa Here

Friday, March 31st, 2006

Hi, I’m Roe’s new Blythe doll. Roe has wanted me for a really long time. She finally got off of her duff and bought me from an EBAY seller. I was sooo excited. Imagine going from the freezing East Coast, living in a dark box to sunny Nor Cal and freedom!! Then what does she do??? She puts a picture of me looking like the Bride of Chucky on her blog. How totally embarrassing for me!! I wish somebody would get the spider web off of my head!!

Knitting Olympics Finale

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

USA

I persevered during a raging head cold, Stitches West and the grand opening of IKEA. Can I get moment of silence?. . . My husband loves them. If the truth be told, I think that he loves that I made something for him. The socks are o.k. but given that he’s the nice guy that he is, I think they pale to the fact that I gave him something made just for him by me.

It has been such a feeling of solidarity to participate with all of the other Fiber Olympians. I am of the opinion that it really doesn’t matter if everyone finished. What matters is the experience, the effort, support and encourage that was universal among all who participated. That makes us all winners of the Gold! Congratulations everyone.
